Global FM Awards of Excellence 2015
The Awards are open to members of
associations (such as the FMA) that are
members of Global FM. This year not only
saw the CBA walk away with a Silver Award,
but it also saw a second Australian project by
I congratulate all of the 2015 applicants,
who faced particularly tough competition
this year, and commend the efforts of our
international judging panel.
World FM Day -- 10 June 2015
This year's World FM day theme, 'Building
Resilience for the Future', reflected on
something that facilities managers do every
day for their businesses, for the economy
and for society. It inspired dozens of events
around the globe -- from France to Nigeria,
Trinidad and Tobago, the United Kingdom
and the United States -- and had the
Twittersphere buzzing. #WorldFMDay had a
reach (unique individuals) of more than 1.4
million, and more than 8.2 million timeline
deliveries (impressions), which more than
doubled last year's efforts.
Here in Australia, across the month of June,
events were held in every major city. The
FMA hosted the premier event in Victoria
with a lunch seminar focusing on risk and
business continuity, while also celebrating the
announcement of the Global FM Awards for
Excellence. It was a huge success.
Other activities marking World FM Day
included an address by Stan Mitchell,
Chairman of the ISO TC 267 Facilities
Management Committee. Mitchell
took the opportunity to talk about how
Global FM can play a role in bringing
together the wider community of facilities
management associations and their
communities to support the creation of a
new international management systems
standard for facilities management.
In his address, Mitchell highlighted that
the development of the standard is very
much in line with the theme for World FM
Day 2015 -- 'Building Resilience for the
Future'. Mitchell said, 'This World FM Day,
I would urge you to celebrate, communicate
and share the message of what our discipline
does, along with the value it can bring, with
the widest community you possibly can'.

World FM Day sponsorship
This year, Global FM was delighted to
announce a World FM Day three-year
sponsor partnership with NJW Limited. This
organisation sees the important role that
Global FM plays, and is keen to engage in its
activities through this long-term sponsorship.
To mark the occasion, I was invited to
participate in a London-based conference
that NJW conducts each year on World
FM Day. This event was well attended by
senior FM practitioners, and provided the
opportunity for me to announce the winners
of the Global FM Awards of Excellence, with
Jones Lang LaSalle from the United Kingdom
winning the Platinum Award.
Global FM and NJW are already planning
next year's World FM Day events, which are
to be held on 8 June 2016.
The Global FM Research Initiative was
commissioned in July 2015, and is well
underway as we gather information across
a range of key industry metrics from 35
countries. The Initiative is being undertaken
by international research organisation Frost
and Sullivan, in conjunction with Global FM.
The Initiative will not only provide the
basis for a global 'state of the industry'
snapshot, but will also reveal some vital
industry comparisons between the various
participating countries. Some of the metrics
'by country' include:
3 industry value as a percentage of GDP
3 numbers of people employed in the
facilities management industry
3 industry trends
3 in-house facilities management versus
outsourced facilities management
3 projected growth.
Initiatives such as this provide real value
to the industry by building on the existing
knowledge base, informing the future strategic
direction of Global FM and our member
Associations, and establishing important
industry connections between countries.
Additionally, and perhaps most importantly,
the outcomes of this research will enable
our member associations to demonstrate
to governments and industry the significant
impact that FM makes on societies in terms
of economic input and employment in the
respective jurisdictions of Global FM members.
The Research Initiative findings report will
be made available to our member
associations in September 2015.
