Rethinking the role of facilities services
Krastich has an unusual background in facilities services.
He began his career in graphic design and advertising at
marketing and communications giant Clemenger Group
before starting a cleaning company, and later acquiring
Sharper Facility Services in 2007.
'I have a passion for the way products are presented,'
says Krastich. 'Nobody at the time had thought about the
impact of cleanliness on product and brand presentation.
Most companies saw cleaning as a low-value-add service.
I believed it could be something more.'
Krastich saw an opportunity to provide a bespoke,
integrated facilities services offering for higher-end
companies. 'Sharper wanted to turn facility services into a
tailor-made offering. We wanted to be proactive rather than
reactive, and considered within marketing strategies.'
Krastich's approach began with a different type of client
relationship. 'Most facilities services companies look at the
job and scope it out. We start by understanding the company,
products, brand and customers, and then work backwards
to design a facility services strategy that is aligned with the
organisation's marketing and sales goals.'
Sharper invested heavily in staff development through in-
house training programs. 'We were determined to develop a
new level of service in the industry and ensure our staff could
identify and resolve any facility issues, so that clients could
get on with running their business. We wanted staff to view
facility services as a specialised, long-term career.'
The investment in staff paid off. Sharper continues to attract
high-quality employees and has an exceptional retention
rate. 'Many of our staff have been with Sharper for almost a
decade, and have grown their career and responsibility as the
business has grown,' says Krastich.
Sharper also built cloud-based technology systems to
provide maximum transparency for clients though detailed
Krastich's innovations are working. Sharper has expanded
to 95 staff, and built a multimillion-dollar turnover and a
national presence. It has a high success rate in project
tenders, and enjoys longstanding relationships in the retail,
property, education and building services sectors.
'Sharper made a deliberate decision to work at the luxury
end of the market -- like a tailor fitting a suit rather than
providing a one-size-fits-all service off the rack,' says Krastich.
'The strategy is working, because clients see the quality and
consistency of our service, and a tangible return on their
investment. They see how our work creates a better customer
and staff experience.'
Strong past, bold future
Krastich has big goals: he wants the Melbourne-based
company to become Australia's leading facilities services
provider for up-market brands, change perceptions of the
industry and encourage companies to view facilities services
as a marketing investment.
He believes that Sharper will extend its footprint in
residential property, as more up-market apartment buildings
require bespoke facilities management services.
Krastich also wants to expand Sharper's offering by
adding services, integrating them and improving problem-
solving and cost savings for clients. 'Problems can arise
when luxury brands use different service providers for facility
maintainence,' he says.
Attracting high-potential employees to Sharper and further
developing existing ones is another priority. 'The image of a
low-skilled cleaner coming in late at night and doing routine
tasks is outdated,' says Krastich. 'Our staff identify and solve
problems, understand the client and provide a service that
helps sell some of Australia's most prestigious products.'
Expanding Sharper's corporate social responsibility
initiatives is another goal. The company contributes to
several humanitarian causes, and provides pro bono facilities
services to some charities.
'We're very proud of where Sharper has come from, and
excited about where it is going,' says Krastich. 'I was cleaning
offices at the start, and risked everything to build this
business. To work with some of Australia's greatest brands,
help innovate the facilities services industry and watch our
staff develop is an immense privilege.'
