competitive price point, while ensuring that
core competencies are obtained in line with
the ASQA framework.
In addition, the flexibility of a series of
electives allows students to personalise
the diploma to focus on the areas that
they would like to specialise in, such as
project management, innovative practice,
or managing client relationships, to name
but a few. This list will continue to grow
as opportunities open up for investing in
content development in new topic areas.
The areas currently being explored for
unit development include retail facilities
management, and residential facilities
With demand for education and
development growing, and with an
increasing level of industry take-up, the
Diploma of Facilities Management will likely
play a vital role in developing a professional
accreditation system for the industry.
National seminar series
While the diploma plays an important role
in upskilling professionals, there is always
a need to sharpen skills and competencies
in contemporary information and technical
details, such as compliance, legislation and
standards – all of which which may change
over time. Over the past 12 months, the
Association has built a series of seminars to
provide just that – detailed information in
particular areas identified by industry. These
provide the basis for continuing professional
development, ensuring that timely and
relevant details are known by professionals.
It is imperative that attendees take tangible
knowledge from each session.
The seminars that have been developed so
far include working at heights, fire services,
contract management and essential safety
measures. These are tangible and important
subject areas where facilities management
professionals need to be aware of the issues
to ensure that they are addressing risks.
The demand for the seminar series has
outstripped expectations in a number
of locations, and the feedback has been
extremely positive. The seminar series is
certainly not a replacement for a qualification,
but it does complement the knowledge
gained through formal education with
additional technical details. The series will
continue to expand into additional topic areas,
and to address gaps identified by industry.
The most recent industry census tells us
that more than 50 per cent of industry
professionals have a degree, and 61 per cent
of professionals believe that their current
qualification is only partially, if at all, useful
in supporting their professional practice.
To combat this, the Association has the
current list of competencies required by
professionals to ensure that they are able
to meet the requirements of contemporary
facilities management practice.
So, how does the Association support
growth in knowledge that aligns with the
core competencies for those who have
identified a lack of relevancy in their
The idea is to develop a taster series – an
online content library based on the identified
competencies, and aligned with the subject
areas of the diploma. The intention is not to
replace the need for a diploma, but rather
to introduce the core competency areas
and provide a mechanism for engagement.
The content will provide a starting point for
professionals to build toward the Diploma
of Facilities Management. This form of
professional development will be available
online, making it extremely accessible. In
this regard, we have responded to industry
feedback about supporting professional
development for a broader audience, and
accommodating those in remote locations.
With clarity of strategy, the Association
is ensuring that gaps in FM professionals’
knowledge and skills continue to be addressed.
There is a future plan to continue to broaden
the opportunities for both formal and informal
education and professional development – so
this is only a part of the picture.
Educational components to deliver
These three connected educational
components support greater engagement,
and deliver tangible and strategic skills for
professionals in the industry.
In many respects, the sky is the limit in
providing education to the sector, with ongoing
development and expansion of facilities
management skills and development. The
Association continues to grow its education
resources to meet demand.
The plan is absolutely clear: deliver high-
quality content to ensure that facilities
management professionals are equipped to
undertake the challenges of contemporary
facilities management in an ever-increasing,
demand-driven environment. In simple
terms, by ensuring a clear pathway and
consistent content for FMs, we will see
